Physicians
Physicians were an important part of the fabric of the early Chagrin community, playing many roles. Dr. Justus Vincent was the first doctor to practice in Chagrin. Dr. R. W. Walters was appointed Health Inspector for the Village and was in charge of the pest house that stood at the top of Grove Hill to quarantine small pox patients.
Dr. H.E. Doty served as Mayor of the Village. Dr. B. LeRoy was the Village’s first Fire Chief. Dr. H.W Curtiss was a physician in Chagrin for over 50 years and also served as Mayor. Following the Civil War he served in the Ohio Legislature and even served a term as Lieutenant Governor.
Dr. Paul Curtiss was the son of H.W. Curtiss. He was known as Dr. Paul so as not to confuse him with his father. The Curtiss home on E. Washington St. and the later medical building, were known as the Curtiss Clinic.
